About Us

Science Teachers' Forum Manipur

Genesis:

At a time when science and technology were increasingly recognised as important drivers of social and economic progress, the need to promote science education and disseminate scientific knowledge among the wider public was becoming ever more evident. The journey of the Science Teachers Forum, Manipur, is a testament to the power of collective action and the enduring contribution of voluntary organisations to the advancement of science education in the state.

In the early 1970s, there was a growing need for a stronger voluntary platform dedicated to the promotion of science education in Manipur. Against this background, a group of dedicated science graduate teachers came together to address their immediate concerns and, in the process, laid the foundation for an organisation that would eventually become the Science Teachers Forum, Manipur.

Around 200 stipendiary science graduate teachers were appointed on the 25th March, 1974 by the Education Department, Government of Manipur under the Half-a-Million Jobs Programme of the Union Government of India. On the 28th July, 1974,  an association under the nomenclature “Half-a-Million Jobs Science Graduate Teachers Association” was formed bringing together approximately 100 teachers with a common objective of securing regular payment their stipends and seeking the regularization of their employment.

By the middle of the 1976, the persistent efforts of the association began to yield results. The Government of Manipur recognize the Association’s demands and in July and August, 1976 approximately 200 science graduate teachers were regularized and posted to schools across the state The regularisation of the teachers marked an important turning point. While their immediate employment-related concerns had been substantially addressed, their experience had also demonstrated the value of collective action and the need for a broader platform dedicated to science education and public engagement with science.

During this period, the need for an active voluntary organisation dedicated specifically to science education and science popularisation in Manipur became increasingly evident. Senior officials of the Education Department, including Shri E. Yaima Singh, then Deputy Director (Planning & Science) of Education and later Director of Education, recognised the importance of such an organisation. Inspired by these suggestions, the members of the association decided to transform their collective effort into a broader and more purposeful organisation.

On 5th September 1976, coinciding with Teachers’ Day, a general body meeting was held at the Mandop of Shri Hanjabam Nirmal Sharma at Uripok Khwai, Brahmapur, Imphal. At this meeting, the association was officially renamed as the “Science Teachers’ Forum, Manipur.” with broader aims of promoting science education, serving the community and protecting the environment. The former Office Bearers of the association, viz. Shri A. Achou Singh, Shri P. Ibopishak Singh, and Shri Ng. Kesho Singh became President, Vice-President, and General Secretary of the Science Teachers’ Forum, Manipur, respectively.
